Design Tasmania, Women in Design

Exhibition and Dinner, October 14 + 15, 2022

Design Tasmania’s annual Colloquium, Women in Design, will converge for an intimate event in Launceston for discussion and connection.

Launching with a ceremonious opening feast by Fluff Corp, audiences will be treated to an immersive dining experience combining ceramics and seasonally grown and wild-caught fare. When dinner is done, the ceramic installation will form part of a 4-week exhibition to remain open to the public in the Gary Cleveland Galleries.

Curated by Design Tasmania’s own Michelle Boyde and moderated by Dr Helen Norrie, the program will deliver inspirational presentations and workshops to immerse audiences in design practice ranging from habitecture, ceramics for endangered species, cultural jewellery, native scent design, material proposals for a post-petrochemical future, as well as land and housing reform.

We arrived in Launceston and had 2 days to forage and investigate the local area, we were guided by local chef, and absolute legend, Sam Bray, we drove around collecting ingredients and plant life, while he answered constant questions about Tasmania, local food and plants. Additional tableware was sourced by Dee Taylor-Graham of Waldies school, who uses a mix of locally dug clays to produce beautiful atmospheric-fired wares. The event was a really big one for me, the display of generosity, patience and welcome really made the whole experience one I will never forget, not to mention the food tasted bloody great. Did it make me want to move to Tasmania? Definitely.
